A vibrant exhibition of contemporary art that reimagines traditional ideas of landscape.  Curated by Emily Ball, the Landscape, Light and Movement exhibition features six artists, all of whom regularly attend courses at the Seawhite studio. 

Each artist has a distinct style and approach to painting, using a range of mediums and disparate starting points.  What they share is a desire to create their own painterly language that meaningfully expresses the way in which they view the world around them.  This ranges from the abundant floribunda in a garden lawn (Judith Smith), cliffs and harbours containing the sea (Julia Shultz), or the way in which natural and manmade landscapes overlap and contrast (Edith Barton).  Inspiration can come from a brief glimpse of green foliage spied through a glowing arch in the Alhambra (Sally Meyer), or from the sense of travelling over and through the landscape when travelling by plane or car (Sylvia Barnes).

For each of the exhibiting artists, painting is not simply about painting what they see.  They are creating images that capture their personal physical experience of being in the landscape, remembering how that moment impacted on all their senses (the sounds, smell, feel of being there). Their paintings are about the act of painting itself.  Felicity Heath’s vivid paintings are a great case in point, as they explore the way in which colours and marks interact and provoke mood and emotion.  What motivates these artists is a delight in discovering what paint can do; how they can mix it to create infinite colours, apply thick blobs of gooey paint or slide thin transparent layers across the canvas, use sweeping gestural brushstrokes, or smear the paint with their fingers.  Their enjoyment in the physicality of paint combined with their confident approach and awareness of things such as colour, mark, composition etc, means that each artwork in this exhibition is packed with intensity and content.
