Landscape Painting Course in ‘Chinsta’, South Africa (NEW)

Landscape Painting Course in ‘Chinsta’, South Africa (NEW)

Exact dates yet to be set

Chintsa is a small coastal village about 45km east of the city of East London. This coastal region is called the Wild Coast and there are stunning uncrowded beaches, sand dunes and subtropical dune vegetation. There are two river lagoons as well as opportunities to walk and paint in the natural bushland of the area. The studio is on the edge of the lagoon where the Cefane River meets the sea and only a few metres from the beach.

This course is designed to help artists navigate how to make exploratory studies in the landscape that move beyond copying what they see and then, back in the studio, to use these studies as triggers to make a series of paintings. Working outside for the first part of the course the students will be shown processes that help them select, capture and invent with their marks and materials. They will focus on what they find visually beautiful, physically invigorating and emotionally engaging. They will develop three paintings in the studio that are a rich celebration of the landscape, their experience and the language of paint. With experimental handling of paint encouraged, students will find that moving into abstraction and being courageous with their work will happen naturally using the guidance and processes provided

(Travel from outside South Africa is by air to Johannesburg or Cape Town and then by air to East London. We will collect from the airport. Accommodation will be at Buccaneers where there is a wide variety of accommodation on offer).
