Painting Pattern ( Part 1 )

Painting Pattern ( Part 1 )

Course dates: September 18th - 20th 2017 (Monday - Wednesday)

Differentiating tree species, finding order in complexity, spotting the tiger in the long grass, or simply gaining optical delight from rhythmic repetition – recognising pattern and getting pleasure from that recognition is something we have, for good reason, evolved to do. Unsurprisingly it has played a major role in painting, both as a formal component but also as a subject in its own right. This three day practical course will explore some of the technical, practical and conceptual aspects of pattern painting, and examine paintings’ fertile relationship with textiles. Each morning there will be a slide show looking at the work of historical and contemporary painters, including Eduard Vuillard, Gustav Klimt, Henri Mattisse, Mikalene Thomas and Beatriz Milhazes.
