“How do you navigate and describe the chaos and jungle of leaves and petals? How do you attempt to capture the elegance, fragility and dance of individual stems and flowers? This is what we explore in our Floribunda courses.” (Emily Ball)
Our Floribunda courses are amongst our most popular. As a subject, flowers and plants have it all: sculptural forms, endless colour combinations and exquisite arrangements that offer an artist a feast of sensory material to draw upon.
With the natural world unfurling its petals and leaves, it seems a good time to tell you about all the ways you can join us for a celebration of flora and fauna in the form of a floribunda course. We have two face-to-face courses which will be delivered from the Seawhite Studio. One focuses on the magic of Spring blooms and the other captures the wonderful qualities of late-summer flowers. We are also excited to add our new pre-recorded Floribunda course to our programme of online courses. Available for download straight into your home studio, this course offers a new take on the subject, focusing on colour and gesture.

Before we launch into details of these courses, we wanted to share details of how you could purchase your very own Emily Ball Floribunda painting. Whilst inspiring other artists to respond to this subject, Emily herself has been busy producing some stunning images that truly celebrate the wonder of this captivating subject.
EMILY BALL’S FLORIBUNDA PAINTINGS AVAILABLE TO PURCHASE
Through the planning preparation and delivery of the Floribunda courses, Emily has been surrounded by flowers: growing them; arranging them; describing them; drawing them and of course, painting them. They have become an absorbing and rewarding subject that have resulted in the beautiful paintings that you see below.

“These five paintings were begun on camera during the live online course in April. Three were begun using the process of exploring, gathering and layering areas of colour. Then two of them were started experimenting with improvised directional gestures. From these starting points they were continued by intensifying those areas that gave back the feeling of the tough, deep dark slices of green leaves and the crumpled soft yet rich feel of the flowers. The marks and feeling of the materials became my guide rather than a desire to replicate the look of the vase of flowers. They influenced each other but ultimately each one has their own character.” ~ Emily Ball

We have one place left on Emily’s Spring Floribunda course, taking place live and in person at the Seawhite Studio in West Sussex at the end of May.
Come and join Emily as she transforms the studio into a hothouse of spring flowers all jostling for your attention with their heady scents, sculptural forms and exquisite colours. It will be a packed four days of demonstrations and exercises to help you explore ways tackling the abundance of flowers and plants: touching smelling and looking will inform the language of marks you will create. By the end of the course, you will have finished paintings that go beyond safe, traditional flower paintings and show a courageous handling of luscious paint.

FLORIBUNDA 2: COLOUR AND GESTURE | PRE-RECORDED ONLINE COURSE | with EMILY BALL | £130

“There is always so much to digest and learn over the course. I did enjoy your exercises very much and it all made so much sense! There is no pressure when doing exercises, [so] one is more relaxed, looser and more playful. It was Floribunda from a different angle - and I very much enjoyed it.” Jane, Floribunda 2 live-streamed course participant
In this Floribunda course, the focus for finding a language for paintings is through colour and gesture. Working on a series of between 6 – 9 small paintings over the duration of the course, students will celebrate the colour, the ordered chaos, the scent and the joy of the subject. Gathering armfuls of colours and marks from the inspiration of the flowers, students will then compose them by layering, selecting, editing, simplifying and inventing, identifying images and motifs as they do so. The paintings will be an exploration into how to capture the life, light, delicacy and poetry of the subject. In the end the paintings themselves will become the subject.

“I was looking for something to help me develop a much more expressive style and Floribunda certainly did that.” ~ Edward, May 2020
Join us for this special Floribunda course which celebrates the character and qualities of late summer flora and fauna.
Late summer flowers, fruits and berries are full of rich, velvety colours. They have soaked up the heat of the summer sun and every colour reflects it back and sings. Even if the blooms are over blown and turning to seed the sculptural character of the plant is still beautiful. This 4 day course will encourage you to be brave and generous with paint, to find a language of marks that expresses the sensuous qualities of the flowers and plants, as you experience them. The studio will be filled with flowers and the course will be packed with demonstrations and exercises to inspire an artist to be playful and celebrate both painting and the plants.
