The Autumn term has already provided us with lots of wonderful courses opportunities to (re)connect with our students as they join us in-person or online for one of our courses. Their commitment, motivation and engagement has been inspiring!
This newsletter contains lots of information about new developments with our online programme of courses. We’re excited to announce that Simon Carter’s The Working Landscape is now available as a pre-recorded course to download. Read the article below to find out more. We’ve also got more information about Emily’s brilliant course Drawing and Painting the Clothed Figure, which is being live-streamed at the end of the month. If you saw some of our social media posts about the recent Colour on Colour course, you’ll know how popular it was. If you were disappointed to miss out on this uplifting and indulgent course (because who doesn’t love to revel in colour?), then we have some great news for you.
Finally, a reminder that we have teamed up with the fantastic shop at Seawhite of Brighton and are able to offer students a 10% discount on art materials. Seawhite offer free delivery on orders over £40, so shopping couldn’t be easier. Click on the image below to go to their online shop and quote the code EB10 at checkout.

The Working Landscape is a four day practical course that gives you the opportunity to follow Simon in his working routines. It is a rare opportunity to look over his shoulder as he walks and draws in the landscape and as he draws and paints in the studio. Filmed by Noah Carter, you will be able to follow Simon onto the Essex coast by means of a short film, and watch as he draws and discusses the process of observational drawing. You will then be required to head out into the landscape to draw, whether it is your garden, the local park, the beach or a favourite walk. Simon will discuss how these drawings can be ‘unpacked’ in the studio, making larger expressive, mark-led drawings from them, and look at how these are used to start a painting.

Drawing and Painting the Clothed Figure | Online Course : live-streamed from the Seawhite Studio | Tutored by Emily Ball |26-29 October 2020 |£165

This course explores how to work from the figure in a dynamic and personally meaningful way. Over four days you will follow Emily and work step-by-step as she looks, selects, makes studies and works directly from model to make paintings. Working alongside Emily in your own studio, you will have your own model (perhaps a family member of a friend) to work from.
With a rich installation of screens, draped pattern fabrics and a chair as a fabulous backdrop for her clothed figure, Emily will incorporate the sculptural quality of the clothes that frame parts of the body with pattern and colour. Rather than striving for a photographic or illustrative likeness, this course is about capturing the sitter’s presence and attitude, as well as celebrating the gaze, the pose.
“The gaze has it all. Capture the gaze and the rest of the image works around it… What can be both frustrating and fantastic is realising how the slightest change to the character and position of a mark can change the gaze and mood of the image.” ~ Emily Ball
This course will give you ‘ways in’ to finding a personal expression of the subject. Using colour and the expressive qualities of the paint, you will create confident images that are direct, full of movement, alive with pattern and elegant arrangements. By the end of the 4 days you will have lots of studies that will be full of good material for many paintings. You will also have begun at least two paintings.

Colour on Colour – Soon to be Available as a Pre-Recorded Online Course
We all know that the short days and grey skies of winter can make us a feel a bit drab and sluggish. If you feel that your work is missing a bit of oomph and you need a bit of help to get your painting mojo back – then we might just have the course for you!
Colour on Colour was a huge success when we ran it as a live-streamed course back in September. Lots of students commented on how joyous it was to revel in colour mixing for three days and how much more confident they felt in using colour as a result of following Emily’s demonstrations and exercises.
The course is all about becoming more knowledgeable and confident when using colour in your paintings. It provides you with opportunities to: explore the light and value of colours; learn how to layer colours to make them pop and shimmer; investigate the expressive potential and emotional resonance of different colours; develop a greater practical and technical understanding of how to use colour to orchestrate your compositions.
We are delighted to say that we will soon be offering Colour on Colour as a pre-recorded online course, so you will be able to download it whenever you want and treat yourself to a creativity adrenaline shot of colour when you need it most! The course should be available to download by the end of the month. We will keep you posted.
