Beginners Painting

This course is suitable for students with little or no experience of handling paint. It is also suitable for anyone who painted a long time ago and is feeling very rusty. Equally, it is ideal if you are wanting to change from acrylics to oils, or oils to acrylics, and would like guidance moving into a new medium. This course will teach you how to handle paint in a free and experimental way, encouraging you to play, to love the material of paint, to let go of any inhibitions. Not so much a technical ‘how to’ course, but a hands on, informative, step by step introduction to the process of painting in your own way. Suitable for absolute beginners and those who are unsure of how to loosen up. You will be encouraged to continue practising the processes given in the weeks between each part of the course and to bring your work to get feedback on during the following sessions.

By registering for Part 1 you are registering for Part 1 , Part 2 and Part 3.

Beginners Painting Course - Part 1

Course Dates December 10 & 11th 2018 (Monday - Tuesday)

By registering for Part 1 you are registering for Part 1 , Part 2 and Part 3.

An Introduction to Paint - in all it’s physical painterly yumminess

Day 1 - using only black and white paint, to really get to understand the physical properties of paint, before being distracted by colour. Using oils and or acrylics (your choice) and associated mediums (gloss, matt, flow enhancer, retarder). Working with abstract marks, consistency of paint, scale, and different surfaces (paper, board, canvas, primed and unprimed) you will get a basic feel for paint as material, without worrying about subject matter.

Day 2. - introducing colour - colour mixing and colour combinations, from the bold, the clashing, the complimentary, to the subtle, once again with no subject matter, just colour itself. Colour next to colour, colour on top of colour, colour for the sake of colour.

An Introduction to Still Life Painting.

Inspired by Matisse, Bonnard, Braque, William Scott and Morandi - you will work from a simple still life set up, with coloured objects and patterned fabrics. Making quick studies, as well as starting 2 or 3 more substantial paintings (on paper, board, or canvas) that you can work on in series over the 2 days. You will be applying the work with colour mixing done in part 1 of the course and also looking at layering an editing to show how a painting evolves and changes as it progresses and resolves.

An introduction to Landscape.

These 2 days will provide the opportunity for you to make painted studies in the landscape, quickly and loosely, to then work from back in the studio. You will be given exercises to keep your approach playful. The gesture, handling of brushes and other mark making tools, will be explored with this subject. The results may be more abstract, working away from the subject, being inventive with composition, marks and colour. Again we can look to Matisse and Bonnard for inspiration, as well as Ivon Hitchens, Joan Eardley and David Hockney.
